Every fatal house fire in Akron in the past five years occurred in a home without a functioning fire alarm.
And a recent survey of Akron residents found that half who responded had inadequate smoke alarm protection.
With these statistics in mind, the Akron Fire Department has started a program that provides home safety inspections, a fire safety video and the recommended number of smoke alarms installed free of charge. The aim is to cut by 10 percent the number of homes that aren’t adequately protected, with the ultimate goal of having smoke alarms in all Akron homes within 10 years.
Akron residents interested in more information or in applying for the smoke alarm program may call 330-375-2211.
Priority will be given to residents who are handicapped or elderly.
The target ZIP codes are 44301, 44306, 44310 and 44320. The Fire Department will take information from residents outside these areas in case there are enough alarms left to install some in other parts of the city.
Special alarms for those who are hearing impaired will be provided.
The program is intended for low-income residents, though residents aren’t required to provide financial information.
