Tips to avoid a wet basement

If you have cracks in your basement walls, seal them to help prevent a leak. This is best done by a waterproofing professional because it could be a serious foundational issue, but if you have just a minor crack and you have some experience, sealing the crack can keep water out and slow further deterioration.
Clean gutters regularly and be sure water is flowing away from the house. The more water that sits around the foundation of the home, the greater the chance it will work its way in over time. Clogged gutters are a fast way to go from a dry basement to a wet basement. Typically, the rain or snow melt will simply spill over in one spot if your gutter is clogged, and saturate the ground right along your foundation. The foundation is not made to take on this much concentrated water over time.
You might think you are safer in the winter, but there are other issues. Even in winter, water will make its way into the basement through broken pipes or frozen ground around the home Make sure your pipes are insulated so they do not burst and flood your basement.
Another thing you can do is have a sump pump installed, which is basically like a small pump to catch excess water in your basement. This protects you if a leak does happen. Once a sump pump is installed, you don’t have to worry as much.
